TRIPLER HISTORY Tripler Army Medical Center can be dated back to 1907, when several Fort Shafter wooden structures were used as a hospital. In 1920, the facility was named after Brig. Gen. Charles Stuart Tripler, in honor of his Army medicine contributions during the Civil War. At the start of World War II, the Tripler hospital at Fort Shafter had approximately 450 beds. In 1942, plans were drawn for a new hospital atop Moanalua ridge, and on Sept. 10, 1948, the new coral pink hospital was dedicated. In 1964, the name was changed to Tripler Army Medical Center, and in 1985, three additional wings were built. Why is Tripler pink?
