306 Hawaii Military Guide • Summer-Fall 2026 hen military families learn they will be living at Aliamanu, they may be surprised that the housing is inside a volcanic crater. Parts of the crater held special significance in ancient times. On the eastern rim lies a heiau (temple) and burial terrace for ancient Hawaiians, while on the opposite edge is an area where the Oahu King Kahahana hid after battle against King Kahekili of Maui in 1783. Today, the large circular site housing all military families is serviced through Fort Shafter Housing. Those living at Aliamanu find plenty to do. You’ll find football, baseball and soccer fields, tennis and basketball courts, and a swimming pool. The Recreation Center features three racquetball courts, an indoor gym, several weight rooms, saunas and locker room, plus on-going classes in swimming and aerobics. The three-mile circle around the crater is a favorite workout for walkers and joggers from Aliamanu and surrounding areas and if you like hills, you won’t W ALIAMANU MILITARY RESERVATION
