SALEM IS MOPO PETS PROFILE KUMA Our cover dog, Kuma, is a 6-year-old woolly Siberian husky you can hear howling from miles away when his pawrents, Maribel and Ralph Camacho of Salem, take him to his happy place: Keizer Rapids Park. The Salem area is super dog-friendly, and Maribel and Ralph take Kuma everywhere with them — to breakfast at Isaac’s and to Cubanisimo Vineyards in the city, and Kuma likes to lie in the grass at Xicha or visit Silverton’s Gallon House while his people enjoy a pint. Like his pawrents, Kuma loves to hike, so keep your eye out for him on the trails at Abiqua Falls, Valley of the Giants and Detroit Lake year-round. (His thick coat keeps him plenty warm during the Pacific Northwest winters.) PLAY: DOG PARKS Sprawling over 1,200 acres, Salem’s Minto-Brown Island Park is packed with adventures for you and your leashed pup, plus a 30-acre unfenced dog park where your pooch can run free. Nestled at a bend in the Willamette River, the 148-acre Keizer Rapids Park offers a fenced offleash dog park. Southwest of Salem, Independence Dog Park has separate areas for small and big dogs, and the Willamette River is right there if your dog likes to swim. WALK: DOG-FRIENDLY HIKES Salem’s 1.5-mile looped Croisan Creek Trail is rarely crowded and is an ideal place to take your leashed pup on a hiking, running or walking adventure. Head north of Salem to Champoeg State Heritage Area and your leashed pooch is welcome on the trails or can roam free at the off-leash dog park. SIT AND SIP: DOG-FRIENDLY WINERIES AND CIDERIES In South Salem, Cória Estates boasts a spacious grassy area that’s perfect for enjoying views of the Willamette Valley with your pooch. At Monmouth’s Airlie Winery, Rocky and Piper are the resident Irish setters and might whisk your dog away for a splash in the on-site pond. You and your pup can lie on the grass while you enjoy food and wine pairings at Jefferson’s St. Innocent Winery. After a tasting at Lady Hill Winery, head across the road to Champoeg State Heritage Area to stroll leafy trails with your doggo. TREATS: PUP-FRIENDLY RESTAURANTS Meat eaters, vegans and their pups are all welcome to grab an outdoor seat at Venti’s Cafe and Beer Vault in downtown Salem.
