on the cover Although internationally known and based in Florida, artist Paul Brent has maintained a studio in Seaside since 2003 and exhibits at Fairweather Gallery. He painted the cover art of the Official 2024 Travel Guide in oil from a watercolor study, reinterpreting some of Seaside’s iconic elements through his unique style in the process. Brent has done live painting demonstrations for First Saturday Art Walks in the Historic Gilbert District and has donated work to local nonprofits such as the Northwest Land Conservancy. Why do you split your time between Florida and the Oregon Coast? For me as an artist, I find many subjects I like to paint in both regions that revolve around water and sand, coastal animals and sea life, as well as architecture of cottages and lighthouses. We love coastal areas, and even though there are differences, there are a lot of similarities, too … like eating seafood. Which mediums do you prefer? I began as a watercolorist simply because it was portable and dried quickly. As I progressed and began winning accolades for my work, I found my own style in watercolor even though it’s a difficult medium to control. I decided to try oil painting in 2000 just to change things up in my career. I experimented with several different ways and eventually found my style in oil. It’s exciting to experiment with new ways. What are your favorite subjects to paint? I’m known for coastal scenes and sea life. However, I do regularly paint flowers and garden scenes as I enjoy working in the garden and growing the wonderful flowers that are so easy to grow in Oregon.
