At the south end of the 2,910foot (887-m) Alsea Bay Bridge, the accessible and free Alsea Bay Bridge Visitor Center & Waldport Museum features displays on Oregon Coast bridges and Native Alsi history. Take in views of the water as you browse shops or meander along the Kittel-Kaufman Trail just minutes from downtown. You can rent a kayak or crab right from the docks at the Port of Alsea. Be sure to take home a fresh loaf from popular bakery Pacific Sourdough. YACHATS Come hungry to relish the dining scene in this small village perched in a bend of Highway 101, which features wood-fired pizza, freshly brewed cider and all the seafood you can eat. There are plenty of sandy beaches and hiking trails along the cliffs nearby, too. North of town, Smelt Sands State Recreation Site attracts hikers to the historic 804 Trail, less than a mile (1.6 km) one way. To the south, the 2,700-acre (1,093-ha) Cape Perpetua Scenic Area has 26 miles (41.8 km) of trails in old-growth forest, a year-round visitor center and naturalist- led programs in the summer. FLORENCE Florence boasts a quaint downtown and big dune adventures in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, the largest expanse of coastal sand dunes in North America, stretching 42 miles (67.6 km) south from town. Your nearest point of entry is south of the beautiful 1930s art deco Siuslaw River Bridge. Rent a sandboard or hire a professional driver to guide you through the sand, and camp nearby at Jessie M. Honeyman Memorial State Park. About 10 miles (16 km) north of town lies the Sea Lion Caves, where an elevator delivers you down into North America’s largest sea cave, home to a rookery of Steller sea lions.
