NORTH OREGON COAST 43 VISITTHEOREGONCOAST.COM TILLAMOOK With five rivers, five bays and the Pacific Ocean, the Tillamook area is a lush valley where paddling and hiking adventures abound. At 319 feet (97 m), Munson Creek Falls is the highest in the Coast Range. The Tillamook County Water Trail claims 250 miles (402 km) of navigable waterways through forests, pastures and estuaries. Tillamook Creamery produces 170,000 pounds (77,111 kg) of cheese daily and offers visitors an opportunity to watch the action at a popular visitors’ center. Learn more about wildfire management and natural history of the area at the Tillamook Forest Center, 22 miles (35.4 km) east of town. CAPE MEARES, OCEANSIDE AND NETARTS Vistas are revealed around nearly every turn on the Three Capes Scenic Route, a 40-mile (64.4-km) drive that loops from Tillamook through several coastal communities. Highlights include Cape Meares, where the shortest lighthouse on the Coast is perched on a bluff above the sea; Cape Kiwanda, with breathtaking dunes; and Cape Lookout, a popular site for beachcombing. Stop by Oceanside, a hillside village with stellar beaches and views of offshore Three Arch Rocks National Wildlife Refuge, then meander past Netarts Bay, popular for clamming, crabbing and fishing. Salt harvested from this pristine bay can be purchased at Jacobsen Salt Co., south of Netarts village. PACIFIC CITY This town is famous for its flat- bottom dory boats launched from the beach directly into the surf. The century-old tradition is celebrated each summer during the Dory Days festival. Watch the action and sip craft beer on the patio of the Pelican Brewing Company Brewpub, which also offers views of the Coast’s other Haystack Rock. Learn to surf or take a beach walk at Bob Straub State Park, or make the challenging climb to the top of the sandy dune at Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area. Wildlife watchers enjoy birding on accessible trails at the Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge. NESKOWIN Just south of Pacific City is Neskowin, a small community with a beach offering beautiful views of Proposal Rock. Choose from a delicious array of foods for a picnic lunch at Neskowin Trading Company and head to the sands. A unique sight south of town is the submerged petrified forest visible only at low tide. Cascade Head Biosphere Region — including lands managed by the Forest Service, the Nature Conservancy and others for over 50 years — offers hikes through diverse ecosystems with fantastic views of the Salmon River and coastline all the way to Lincoln City.
