Easy access on both ends allows for shorter jaunts in the forested hills or dunes. In the heart of nearby Fort Stevens State Park, the 2.4-mile (3.9-km), family-friendly Coffenbury Lake Trail keeps a mostly level grade while hugging the shore of its namesake reservoir. Keep an eye out for shorebirds, resident elk and other wildlife around the park. Walk through an old-growth forest of Sitka spruce before arriving at a viewpoint that looks upon the offshore Tillamook Rock Lighthouse — also known as “Terrible Tilly” — with the 3.2-mile (5.1-km) Tillamook Head Traverse Hike in Ecola State Park. Trails in the Tillamook area showcase the area’s diverse landscapes. Kilchis Point Reserve, named for Tillamook Chief Kilchis, hosts a 0.3mile (0.5-km), wheelchair-accessible, paved loop trail with interpretive panels that discuss local flora and fauna, as well as regional Native American history. Sitka Sedge State Natural Area hosts about 4 miles (6.4 km) of family-friendly hiking trails near Pacific City.
