SHOW LOVE FOR THE COAST Deepen your intimacy with the Oregon Coast’s remarkable landscape by volunteering to help preserve it. With opportunities from Astoria to Brookings, you’ll find the perfect match for your skills and meet like-minded individuals who share your love of the region. Adopt a Beach. The Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition’s CoastWatch program invites frequent beachwalkers to adopt a mile (1.6 km) of beach. Each month volunteers walk their mile and record wildlife sightings and erosion issues, as well as weather patterns and human activity. Clean It Up. Both the Surfrider Foundation and SOLVE host regular events, recruiting volunteers to collect litter and marine debris. Families and leashed dogs are welcome. Even on days with no events, bring bags to pick up litter along your beach walk. Always pack out food scraps and dog waste. Preserve Trails. Help to maintain coastal hiking and biking trails during work parties hosted by Trailkeepers of Oregon, the Northwest Trail Alliance, the Tillamook Off-Road Trail Alliance and the Wild Rivers Coast Mountain Biking Association. Share the Love. If you enjoy teaching and talking with people, volunteer as an educator with the Haystack Rock Awareness Program, Trailkeepers of Oregon, or the Cape Perpetua and Cape Falcon Tidepool Ambassador programs. Know the Rules. Some sections of Oregon’s shoreline are protected from any collection of plants, animals or similar. Read signs posted at beachaccess points to understand the particular regulations for that area. Allow Wildlife Some Space. Ensure that your pets and children don’t chase or harass any wildlife. The law requires you give harbor seals on beaches at least 100 yards (91.5 m) of space. It’s best not to touch or move creatures in tide pools. If an animal is reacting to you, you are too close. Step Lightly. Avoid roped-off sections and any area established to protect western snowy plover nests from March 15 to September 15. Always stay on designated trails, helping to preserve vegetation that threatened species like the Oregon silverspot butterfly call home.
