The century-old tradition is celebrated each summer during the Dory Days festival. Watch the action and sip craft brew on the patio of the award- winning Pelican Brewing Company Brewpub, which also offers views of the Coast’s other Haystack Rock, not to be confused with Cannon Beach’s. Suit up with gear from Moment Surf Company and take a surf lesson, or take a challenging climb to the top of the sandy dune at Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area, where kids (and the young at heart) enjoy tumbling and rolling their way back down. Nature beckons at the tranquil Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge with its terrific bird-watching, accessible trails and observation decks; at Bob Straub State Park; and at the tidal pools at Cape Kiwanda Marine Gardens. NESKOWIN Just south of Pacific City is Neskowin, where a small beach offers beautiful views of Proposal Rock. Grab a picnic lunch at Neskowin Trading Company and head to the sands. A unique sight south of town is the submerged petrified forest visible only at low tide. Cascade Head Scenic Research Area — lands managed by the Forest Service, the Nature Conservancy and several other entities — has fantastic views of the Salmon River and coastline all the way to Lincoln City.
