Conditions can change drastically at a moment’s notice. Always remain aware of your surroundings while near the sea. Understand the daily tide schedules and weather patterns, and watch your footing on slippery rocks, loose driftwood and other hazards in the sand. Every year visitors are surprised by sneaker waves, which can occur at any moment and bring a high surge of fast-moving water far up onto the beach. Never turn your back on the ocean, stay off logs, and watch your kids and pets. Even when the water is only ankle- or knee-deep, coastal riptides can pull anyone out and under. When hiking Lincoln City’s headlands, park in designated areas, stay on the trail, and be mindful of signage and maps. Cliffs can be steep with unexpected exposure.
