January/February 2025 HAWAII PARENT 141 Develop self-awareness. In theater you really have to be conscious of everything that is going on around you as well as everything going on within oneself. Actors must be aware of their physicality, tone and facial expressions and align it with the character they’re playing. This is one of the keys to becoming a successful performer as well as a productive human being in society. Being fully aware of yourself and your capabilities, having to be constantly aware of the physical space you are moving through is fundamental for productivity in any field in the world. Be open and receptive to criticism. One thing that is evident, whether you are talking about movie stars or the young theatre student, all performers must learn to accept criticism. Whether it’s coming from the director or some media critic or even from a fellow actor, it is almost impossible to become a good performer without getting feedback from people. Not only does theatre expose actors to criticism but teaches them to be receptive to comments and taking them into consideration, becoming good listeners and learning to respect different point of views.
