Adults with special needs face extraordinary barriers to achieving what everyone wants and deserves: independence, opportunity and community. Over 55,000 Bay Area individuals have an intellectual or developmental disability, of which 55% are adults. Over 80% live at home with their families. Many are isolated and lonely. The dire shortage of housing for this vulnerable population creates a crisis as their family members age and can no longer care for them. Driven by passion, innovation, and collaboration—the very spirit of Silicon Valley—a group of parents decided to create a solution. The Big Wave Project will provide housing and a hub for community connections, continuing education programs and access to job opportunities for Bay Area adults with special needs. And a safe place to live a life of joy and meaning. Construction on the project has begun, and your help is needed to fund needs-based apartments reserved for adults with extremely limited resources and start-up operating costs for the facility.
