Within the Walla Walla Valley AVA lies The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater AVA, which was approved in early 2015. The distinguishing feature of The Rocks District is its soil, which consists primarily of dark-colored basalt cobblestones; Syrah is the most widely planted grape (40%) and Cabernet Sauvignon is second (32%). Vineyards in the Walla Walla Valley will continue to expand, further positioning it as one of the top growing regions in the world.
