About Fittings WHAT DOES “CABLE INFILL” MEAN? This phrase refers to the cable and fittings used to “fill in” a cable railing frame. WHAT DOES “GRADE 316L CABLE” MEAN? Grade 316L is a higher grade of stainless steel than 316. The “L” is for “low carbon,” which makes the steel stronger and more resilient. HOW IS THE CABLE ATTACHED TO THE POSTS? Cable ends are fed into the hollow sleeves of fittings and crimped in place. These fittings then attach to posts, walls, or other surfaces to anchor the cable. We can do this process for you prior to shipping or you can order our hand cable crimper (p.142) to do it yourself. WHAT ARE FITTINGS? WHAT ARE ASSEMBLIES? Fittings are the attachment hardware used to anchor and tighten the cables of cable railing. Each cable needs a tensioner on one end and a terminal on the other or two tensioners, one for each end. Order fittings individually or in assemblies. Fitting assemblies contain 2 fittings each, usually one tensioning end and one terminal end. WHAT DOES FIELD SWAGED MEAN? FACTORY SWAGED? Field swaged fittings are shipped unattached to cable and are intended to be swaged “in the field” by the installer using a cable crimper (p.146). Factory swaged fittings are attached to cable here in our shop using our professional in-house machine, which delivers 175 tons of swaging power for a stronger and more attractive end result that reduces installation time. Most fittings will require field swaging on one or both ends, but some can be completely factory swaged upon request. HOW MANY CABLES AND FITTINGS ARE NEEDED FOR A CABLE RAILING? This varies greatly from project to project. Here are some general guidelines. For Cable: Measure the length of each run and multiply that by the number of holes in your posts (36” posts will typically have 11 holes; 42” will have 13). That number is the feet of cable you need. For Fittings: Count the number of runs you have and multiply that by the number of holes in your posts (36” posts will typically have 11 holes; 42” will have 13). That number is how many cable pieces you need. Each cable piece either needs one assembly or two individual fittings. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE DIFFERENT KINDS OF FITTINGS? Thru-Post Fittings - Fittings that pass through holes in the first or last post of each cable run. You choose the end style. To-Post Fittings - Fittings that attach to the inside face of the first or last post of a run (no need for holes through these posts). Can also be attached to walls and other surfaces. Swageless Assemblies - Fittings which feature special internal mechanisms that grip the cable without being crimped. No need to buy or use a cable crimper. 100 | 888.686.7245 | STAINLESSCABLERAILING.COM
