60 OregonStater.org COURTESY OF RYMON FAMILY LARRY M. RYMON, ’69 Larry M. Rymon, who played a pivotal role in reintroducing ospreys to Pennsylvania, died June 18 at age 90. A longtime biology professor at East Stroudsburg University, Rymon realized the state’s osprey population had not recovered after the pesticide DDT was banned in 1972. In 1980, he launched a then-controversial plan to relocate fledgling ospreys from other states to human-tended nests. Over the next 18 years, he persisted until the bird population was reestablished. His work was the subject of the documentary Return from Forever, and his methods were later adopted to help reintroduce bald eagles to Pennsylvania. “Larry developed his love of the environment through his enriching experiences at OSU and living in the beautiful state of Oregon,” said his wife, Barbara Rymon. “He brought that love back to Pennsylvania, instituting an environmental studies program and sharing it with his many students.” He is survived by Barbara, his son Tyler and daughter Holly.
