Dickey, Philomath • JOHN V. BYRNE John V. Byrne, OSU’s 12th president, from 1984 to 1995, and former leader of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, died on Jan. 11. He was 95. Byrne was one of the first faculty members to teach oceanography at Oregon State and served as dean of the newly created School of Oceanography, director of the Hatfield Marine Science Center, and OSU’s first dean of Research, among other leadership roles. He left to become the administrator of NOAA, returning to serve as Oregon State’s president. Byrne oversaw the expansion, renovation and acquisition of dozens of buildings and other campus facilities, helped raise $40 million for the expansion of the Valley Library, established more than 30 new degrees and created the University Honors College and the Department of Ethnic Studies. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; children Donna, ’80, Karen and Steven Byrne; and grandchildren.
