THE LEGEND OF MAUI Of all the islands and cultures strewn across the vast Pacific ocean there is only one that bears the name of the deity who slowed the sun, raised the islands from the deep, and defended the right of mankind to live upon this world. Of course, here on the island of Maui, we feel a sense of ownership of this name and legacy. O‘ahu also claims Maui as their own, as do other islands and island groups throughout the Pacific. In fact, the legends of a great being named Maui go as far back as the Philippines, speaking to how far back in the distant past these stories go. Most of the legends of Maui start with a problem or trouble being presented to him, often by his mother. He then seeks advice from an elder, for they hold the wisdom. As he goes forth to conquer this foe or solve his problem he does so not for fame and glory, but for the betterment of society and the families around him.

NATIVE BIRDS Hawai‘i is home to many unique native birds that evolved in isolation, like the vibrant ‘Apapane, scarlet ‘I‘iwi, and adaptable Hawaiian ‘Amakihi— important pollinators of the iconic ‘ōhi‘a lehua tree. Another special native is the nēnē, Hawai‘i’s state bird and an endemic goose uniquely adapted to the islands’ volcanic landscapes. The pueo, a native Hawaiian owl, is also highly regarded in local culture as a guardian spirit. These birds hold deep cultural significance and are essential to Hawai‘i’s natural heritage. Many face threats from habitat loss, invasive species, and disease. Ongoing conservation efforts work to protect and restore their habitats, ensuring these irreplaceable treasures thrive for future generations to appreciate and enjoy.

HAWAIIAN MUSIC AND INSTRUMENTS The sounds of Hawai‘i are instantly recognizable and weave a rich tapestry of culture and history— from the gentle, soothing strum of the ‘ukulele to the powerful, resonant chants of oli that echo ancient stories and prayers. Traditional instruments like the ipu hēkē (double gourd drum), slack key guitar (kī hō‘alu), and nose flute (‘ohe hano ihu) carry deep cultural significance, each voice adding layers to the art of storytelling and the graceful movements of hula. These instruments don’t just create music—they honor the connection between people, the land (‘āina), and the ocean (kai). Across Maui, you can experience this vibrant musical heritage firsthand at many intimate venues and festivals. Take a moment to pause and immerse yourself in the melodies that bring Hawai‘i’s culture and history to life, inviting you into a world where every note holds meaning and aloha.

HAWAIIAN LEI The lei is a symbol of Hawai‘i and holds significant cultural and historical value. In Hawaiian culture, the lei is a symbol of love, respect, and aloha (affection). The tradition of wearing and presenting lei dates to ancient times in Hawai‘i. Today, lei are given and worn for various occasions, including weddings, graduations, birthdays, and other celebrations. The lei remains an integral part of Hawaiian culture, serving as a visual expression of the aloha spirit and a connection to the land and its people. It continues to be an enduring symbol of the vibrant heritage of Hawai‘i, and is cherished by both locals and visitors alike.
LAU HALA WEAVING Lau hala, the woven leaves of the hala (pandanus) tree, is one of Hawai‘i’s most treasured traditional arts. For centuries, Native Hawaiians have used this versatile material to create practical and beautiful items—sleeping mats, baskets, fans, hats, and more. Beyond function, each weave pattern holds cultural meaning, often passed down from generation to generation through family lineages. The process of lau hala weaving is an act of deep respect. Leaves are carefully harvested, de-spined, cleaned, softened, and cut into strips before weaving begins. The entire preparation can take days or even weeks—each step a form of ceremony. Weaving is often done in quiet focus, with stories and knowledge shared as hands move in rhythm with the past. Today, lau hala weaving remains a living tradition. Skilled weavers continue to teach and preserve this practice throughout Hawai‘i, keeping both technique and meaning alive. Many visitors are surprised to learn how much of Hawaiian life was woven—literally—into the fabric of daily living.

PANIOLO - THE HAWAIIAN COWBOY Long before cowboys roamed the American West, the Hawaiian Islands had their own skilled cattle wranglers—the paniolo. Introduced in the early 1800s when King Kamehameha I was gifted cattle from Mexico, the growing herds soon required expert management. Mexican-Spanish vaqueros were invited to the islands to teach Hawaiians the art of horseback riding and cattle herding, and the paniolo tradition was born. Upcountry Maui became the heart of paniolo culture, with wide open pastures, ranches, and rodeos still thriving today. Towns like Makawao blend Hawaiian heritage with cowboy charm, offering visitors a taste of authentic ranch life. You’ll find tack shops, saddle makers, and maybe even a parade or pā‘ū rider celebration honoring this unique history. From their wide-brimmed hats to their deep respect for the land and animals, paniolo embody the spirit of aloha in a distinctly Hawaiian way. For a glimpse into this rich culture, consider visiting a working ranch or attending a local rodeo. It’s a side of Maui most visitors never expect—but one that stays with you.

HAWAIIAN PETROGLYPHS Carved into ancient lava rock across the Hawaiian Islands, nā ki‘i pōhaku—Hawaiian petroglyphs—offer a mysterious and powerful link to the past. These stone carvings depict human figures, animals, canoes, and symbolic shapes, believed to represent stories, genealogies, or significant events. Though their exact meanings are still being studied, many are thought to reflect spiritual beliefs, ancestral connections, or moments in daily life. Sites like Pu‘u Loa on Hawai‘i Island or Olowalu Petroglyphs here on Maui allow visitors to witness these ancient messages firsthand. If you go, tread lightly—these cultural treasures are fragile, sacred, and protected. They remind us that long before writing, Hawaiians left stories written in stone.

HE E NALU - HAWAIIAN SURFING He‘e nalu, or Hawaiian surfing, is more than just a sport—it’s a deeply rooted cultural tradition that dates back centuries. Ancient Hawaiians mastered the art of riding waves on wooden boards, using surfing as a way to connect with the ocean and honor the mana (spiritual power) of the sea. Surfing was an integral part of daily life and social structure, with chiefs often showcasing their skill to demonstrate strength and leadership. Today, surfing continues to be a symbol of Hawaiian identity and aloha ‘āina (love of the land and sea). Modern surfers carry on the legacy of he‘e nalu by respecting the ocean and its rhythms while celebrating the joy and freedom of riding waves. Whether on the famous North Shore or smaller local breaks, surfing remains a vibrant and spiritual experience deeply tied to Hawai‘i’s heritage. ‘

ENVIRONMENTAL MOMENT In Hawai‘i there is a special care for nature and the natural environment. The proverb, “He ali‘i ka ‘āina, he kauwā ke kanaka”—land is chief, man is its servant—sums up this mentality perfectly. The belief that our actions and behaviors should be shaped to fit the land instead of the other way around is a common indigenous belief that has allowed the Hawaiian people to live in symbiosis with the natural world for millennia. The more we cherish and protect our environment today, the healthier it will be for future generations. The Hawaiian word for land, ‘āina, is often broken down into the verb, ‘ai, which means to “eat/consume/be eaten”, and na, a word meaning here “that which”. A descriptive definition of ‘āina is “that which we consume” as well as “that which consumes us”. This definition of land acknowledges the circle of life and calls for our continued protection and respect for this natural, and finite, resource.

HAWAIIAN WAYFINDING Long before GPS or compasses, the early Polynesians mastered the open ocean using only the stars, ocean swells, wind patterns, bird behavior, and even cloud shapes to find their way. This incredible practice, known as wayfinding, is how the first voyagers reached Hawai‘i over a thousand years ago in double-hulled canoes built entirely by hand and guided by ancestral knowledge. These voyaging canoes, like the revered Hōkūle‘a, are more than vessels—they are symbols of cultural pride, environmental stewardship, and the strength of indigenous science. Their long-distance journeys, including a worldwide sail completed in 2017, have helped revive interest in traditional navigation and strengthened Hawaiian identity across generations. Today, canoe voyaging is a living tradition, taught and practiced throughout Hawai‘i. Maui is home to several canoe clubs and cultural practitioners who continue to train in both modern sailing and ancient techniques.
