THE LEGEND OF MAUI Of all the islands and cultures strewn across the vast Pacific ocean there is only one that bears the name of the deity who slowed the sun, raised the islands from the deep, and defended the right of mankind to live upon this world. Of course, here on the island of Maui, we feel a sense of ownership of this name and legacy. O‘ahu also claims Maui as their own, as do other islands and island groups throughout the Pacific. In fact, the legends of a great being named Maui go as far back as the Philippines, speaking to how far back in the distant past these stories go. Most of the legends of Maui start with a problem or trouble being presented to him, often by his mother. He then seeks advice from an elder, for they hold the wisdom. As he goes forth to conquer this foe or solve his problem he does so not for fame and glory, but for the betterment of society and the families around him.

ENVIRONMENTAL MOMENT In Hawai'i there is a special care for nature and the natural environment. The proverb, “He ali'i ka 'āina, he kauwā ke kanaka”—land is chief, man is its servant— sums up this mentality perfectly. The belief that our actions and behaviors should be shaped to fit the land instead of the other way around is a common indigenous belief that has allowed the Hawaiian people to live in symbiosis with the natural world for millennia. The more we cherish and protect our environment today, the healthier it will be for future generations. The Hawaiian word for land, ‘āina, is often broken down into the verb, ‘ai, which means to “eat/consume/ be eaten”, and na, a word meaning here “that which”. A descriptive definition of ‘āina is “that which we consume” as well as “that which consumes us”. This definition of land acknowledges the circle of life and calls for our continued protection and respect for this natural, and finite, resource.

MAUI’S TOP BEACHES WEST MAUI / KĀ’ANAPALI / KAPALUA Fronting Kā’anapali Resort area, Kā’anapali Beach is one of Maui’s best. Consistent sunny weather conditions and playful waves make it great for all ages. A paved beach walk runs along shore from the Hyatt to the Sheraton with some of Maui’s most popular restaurants, snorkeling spots, kayak rentals and a beachfront shopping complex. KĀ’ANAPALI BEACH A fantastic swimming and snorkeling beach, it is often less crowded than its popular Kā’anapali beach neighbor. Kahekili Park offers picnic tables, bathrooms and an expansive grassy area for beach side play. KAHEKILI PARK, AIRPORT BEACH PARK Next to the Napili Kai Resort, Napili Bay is known as one of the best beaches on Maui. Great for both swimmers and snorkelers, its sandy bottom slowly slopes down to where snorkelers can explore the coral reef in shallower waters. During high surf there is an impressive undertow as the waves slap onto the steep shoreline and recede quickly back into the ocean. While lots of fun for the whole family, it can often be crowded. NAPILI BAY BEACH North past Napili on Hwy 30, about 1⁄2 mile past mile marker 32. This is one of the best snorkeling destinations in the world when the conditions are right. Located in a marine life preserve, the fish are numerous and the coral formations are spectacular. Honolua Bay is also a well known surf spot when the swell is up. If you see surfers out around the point to the right, it means snorkeling conditions aren’t at their best. Parking is challenging as there are only a few spaces in roadside turnouts available. HONOLUA BAY Fronting the Kā’anapali Resort area, Black Rock is a prominent rocky peninsula housing a stunning snorkeling location at the north end of Kā’anapali beach. The conditions are generally great and with its nice long stretch of sand it is inviting for the whole family. BLACK ROCK

KIHEI / WAILEA / MAKENĀ South Kihei Road just before Kamaole Beach 1, Charley Young Beach is a large sandy beach with ample sunbathing spots, playful waves and offshore snorkeling. Indulge in a game of beach volleyball with a public net setup and available for play. CHARLEY YOUNG BEACH Ulua Beach was named one of the Top 10 Most Beautiful Beaches in America. It’s a spectacular swimming beach due to its sandy bottom and wonderful weather conditions. Snorkeling is also beautiful here when the conditions are right. In addition, it does have a full shower and restroom facility available. ULUA BEACH Located towards the end of Mākena Alanui Drive. There are 2 entrances with designated parking lots. Mākena Beach, also popularly referred to as “big beach,” is one of Maui’s best known beaches. In the summer months, this beach is known for its dangerous shore break and strong currents. MĀKENA BEACH Near mile marker 9 on Hwy 36. Ho’okipa is a mecca to the windsurfing world, and is also a world class surfing destination. There are professional windsurfing competitions held here, and on just about any day with wind (which are most days) you can watch pros doing absolutely amazing things with sailboards. There is a beach parking overlook to enjoy watching the action or there is also a stretch of beach to pull up a chair or lounge on a blanket. This is not a destination for optimistic windsurfing or kitesurfing novices. HO’OKIPA BEACH PARK Kamaole Beach Parks are located along South Kihei Road. Generally great conditions, bodyboarding waves and snorkeling points at each location! In addition, Kamaole Beach Parks each offer convenient shower and bathroom facilities, easy access parking areas and are all lifeguarded beaches with specific hour. The best viewing of the humpback whales is from December to April offering a unique opportunity for locals and visitors to witness their aweinspiring behaviors and experience the thrill of encountering these gentle giants up close. Enjoy a boat trip to view the humpback whales while you are here on Maui to get the best views. The humpbacks’ annual migration to Hawai'i has not only become a symbol of the islands but also a testament to the importance of conserving and protecting these remarkable marine mammals and their fragile marine habitats.
