Lewis and Clark traveled for more than a year before reaching the majestic Columbia River Gorge on their Corps of Discovery Expedition two centuries ago. Fortunately for you, the west end of the gorge is less than an hour’s drive from downtown Portland. The Columbia River divides Washington and Oregon, flowing through the Columbia River Gorge, which is up to 4,000 feet deep in places and has steep basalt and volcanic peaks and waterfalls tumbling out of mossy, fern-filled forests. The Washington side of the gorge doesn’t get nearly as much attention as its twin across the Columbia, but touring the less-trafficked half offers a panoramic hike at Beacon Rock, a challenging trek up Dog Mountain, wildlife watching in the Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge, a cluster of attractions in Maryhill and more. Most day-trippers stick to the crowded roads winding east out of Portland into the national scenic area — understandable, given that the Mt. Hood & the Columbia River Gorge Waterfalls, scenic lookouts and lush hikes abound in this Tolkien-esque landscape. most-iconic sites lie on the Oregon side. At the gateway to the area is the charming, historic downtown Troutdale, where you’ll find Red Trillium Gallery, Troutdale Art Center, Celebrate Me Home boutique and cafe, and spectacular soft-serve and sandwiches at Sugarpine Drive-In. Many first-timers don’t truly comprehend the otherworldly beauty of the gorge until they come around the bend in the highway Mt. Hood Government Camp Timberline Lodge and see the Vista House at Crown Point, a historic observatory offering a panoramic view from 733 feet above the Columbia River. On warmer days, sun worshippers show skin at nearby Rooster Rock State Park, a popular spot for swimming. The park also has a queer-friendly, clothing-optional stretch of beach. No matter the forecast, Rooster Rock is a great spot to enjoy a picnic and take a hike.
