You could spend the better part of a day at just one of the city’s one-of-a-kind museums, parks or neighborhoods. Here are a few ideas to fuel your family fun. Start your day on the east side of the Willamette River at the sprawling breakfast joint 1 Jam on Hawthorne (2239 SE Hawthorne Blvd.). Choose from a delicious assortment of scrambles, sandwiches, waffles and made-from-scratch specialties. The kids’ menu is far more than an afterthought (with offerings like oatmeal chai blueberry pancakes and French toast with marionberry puree), and a designated play area is a fun place to blow off steam. After breakfast, head to 2 OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science and Industry; 1945 SE Water Ave.). It’s one of the leading museums of its kind in the United States. Mesmerizing exhibits explore life on earth, and the planetarium, theater and interactive displays are educational and fun, with the science playground geared to ages 6 and under. Just a short walk from OMSI, check out the 3 Oregon Rail Heritage Center (2250 SE Water Ave.). Home to three early 20th-century steam locomotives, the center explores Oregon’s railroad history through exhibits and special events. For the junior railroad buffs, the center can be rented for birthday parties. Head west across the river to the Pearl District, where, on a hot day, you can cool your toes in the popular water feature at 4 Jamison Square. If it’s drizzling out (and even if it’s not), take a detour to 5 Powell’s City of Books (1005 W. Burnside St.), with room after room of titles for children, teens and adults. Grab lunch at nearby 6 Screen Door (1131 NW Couch St.), with Southern comfort classics like fried chicken, shrimp and grits, buttermilk biscuits, and pecan pie. You can spend an entire day at 7 Washington Park, a more-than-400acre green space on the city’s southwest side. The 8 World Forestry Center (4033 SW Canyon Road) explores the science, culture and history of forests. Take the canopy lift ride, test your smoke-jumping skills and learn about the animals that live in the forest. And don’t miss the acclaimed 9 Oregon Zoo (4001 SW Canyon Road), with its many wild and beautiful inhabitants — everything from monkeys and penguins to elephants, lions, cheetahs and red pandas.
