Youth Education 88 Middle and high schools are required to provide 990 hours of instruction annually, or an average of 5.5 hours per school day. Hawaii’s education laws require that children turning five years old on or before July 31 enter kindergarten in the upcoming SY. For example, children who turned five on or before July 31, 2025 are required to enroll for the 2025-26 SY. The law does not make the July 31 cut off mandatory for private schools since these institutions typically set their own age requirements. More than 97 percent of Hawaii's five-year-old keiki already attend kindergarten voluntarily. Under the Enrollment tab, go to the Quick Start column and click on Military Families. SPECIAL PROGRAMS Since military families move approximately every 2 to 4 years, finding a quality school where you're stationed is critical for building a strong academic foundation for children thrust into constant change. Hawaii has programs in place that are specific to military families for making the educational transition easier. Under the Enrollment Tab, go to the Quick Start column and click on Partners & Resources beneath Military Families. You’ll find details on the Joint Venture Educational Forum and Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission (MIC3). A+ PROGRAM Out-Of-School-Time (OST) programs provide a safe venue for students between the end of the school day and the availability of their family and/or caregivers. These may also extend to evenings, weekends, holidays and intersessions (including summer). Among these is the A+ Program. SCHOOLS & CLASSES (CONTINUED) KAMAAINA KIDS Kamaaina Kids is a local nonprofit dedicated to serving Hawai‘i’s children and families through quality programs that inspire learning, friendship and community. From preschool and after-school care to seasonal day camps, youth enrichment and aquatics, Kamaaina Kids provides safe, nurturing spaces where keiki can grow, explore and thrive. Their preschool program offers infants through pre-kindergarten a strong start with hands-on learning, caring teachers and classrooms designed for discovery. As children move through the program, they develop social skills, creativity and early academic foundations. Beyond preschool, Kamaaina Kids supports families year-round with before- and afterschool A+ programs, school break camps, and outdoor education experiences. With locations across the islands, they make child care and enrichment accessible where families live, work and play. Families appreciate the consistency, trust, and long-standing commitment that Kamaaina Kids brings to every community it serves.
