Big-Screen Outdoor Movie Find a big, blank wall outside or hang up a sheet. Set up a projector and a sound system. Throw the blankets on the ground. Bring out the popcorn. Screen a kid-friendly flick. Voila! It’s an upgraded and memorable at-home movie experience. For additional fun, keiki can create cars out of boxes, painting and decorating them to “drive in” to their movie. They could also dress up as the movie characters to make the night extra special. Grow a Garden Many children are curious and love to dig in the dirt. Begin a garden this fall, and you could see the fruits of your family’s labor for seasons to come. Plant directly into Hawaii’s rich soil, create a raised garden bed, or simply utilize pots and potting soil. Find an area that receives maximum sunlight, and water daily. Some hardier, faster-growing plants to try include tomatoes, beets, lettuce, and herbs like mint, basil, oregano, and sage. Visit one of Hawaii’s local nurseries or the garden centers at Home Depot or Lowe’s to secure supplies. Tip: A smaller area, such as 3 feet by 3 feet, is more manageable when starting a garden, and smaller, kid-friendly hoes, rakes, spades, and cultivators are available as well.
