Explode a Volcano Replicate Hawaii Island’s Kilauea volcano, and watch it explode in your own backyard. An easy method is to tape a two-liter Coca-Cola bottle to cardboard in an upright position. Then cover the bottle with newspaper, painting and shaping the paper to form the volcano. Leave the Coca-Cola lid exposed. When the volcano’s paint is dry, open the lid and quickly drop about five Mentos inside to see the “lava” soar. Google “Coca-Cola and Mentos” for some other fun ideas and the science behind the explosion. Tie-Dye Create groovy shirts with a DIY tie-dye kit from stores like Walmart or Target. The kit typically includes dye bottles, plastic gloves, rubber bands, and a basic guide. Reuse older shirts or purchase new ones. Do some internet research for design inspiration. Advice: Tie-dye outside and wear clothing that can be stained, so you don’t end up with a whirlwind of colors in an undesirable location. Backyard Camping While a trip to one of Hawaii’s many public and private campsites is a fun family activity a safer and often easier alternative is to enjoy camping in the backyard, or even in the living room. Set up a tent. Roast some marshmallows on the stove or grill, adding chocolate and crackers for a delicious s’more.
