156 Hawaii Parent March/April 2026 Waimea Valley Pearl Harbor Aviation Located on Ford Island, Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum is a National Historic Landmark and an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, situated on the site of the nation’s only aviation battlefield. Largely unchanged since the December 7, 1941, attack, the historic hangars still bear visible bullet holes, strafe marks, and bomb damage. Spanning more than 75 years of Pacific aviation history, General Admission includes access to over 50 historic aircraft and exhibits housed in Hangar 37, Hangar 79, and the Raytheon Pavilion. The museum’s newest experience, the Top of the Tower Tour, offers a rare perspective of the Pearl Harbor battlefield from the iconic Ford Island Control Tower. This guided tour includes exclusive access to the 15-story, 168-foot tower, featuring the restored elevator, Operations Building, upper cab, firehouse exhibit, and sweeping 360-degree views from the observation deck. Waimea Valley offers a lush, immersive setting where families can explore historical, cultural, botanical, archaeological, and ecological wonders while journeying through the sacred valley. The valley is home to world-class botanical collections featuring more than 5,000 plant species, including many native Hawaiian plants. Families can explore the grounds at their own pace or join a guided tour for deeper insight into the area’s history and natural resources. With paid admission, guests are also invited to take part in cultural activities such as lei making, hula lessons, Hawaiian games, and hands-on crafts. Knowledgeable guides help visitors identify native and introduced plants, explore streams and the iconic Waimea Waterfall, spot native fish, and learn about the valley’s birdlife.
