HELPING CHILDREN AND LOVED ONES FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE Once you understand what may be causing the fear, there are ways to help create a more positive experience. Encouraging regular preventive visits is important because avoiding the dentist can often make anxiety worse over time. • Parents can also: • Practice calming exercises before appointments • Read books or watch videos about positive dental visits • Offer reassurance and praise • Accompany children during appointments when appropriate • Speak with the dentist beforehand about concerns or triggers HOW TO RELIEVE DENTAL ANXIETY If children feel anxious about the dentist, they may resist appointments or become upset leading up to visits. Some adults may even postpone check-ups themselves because of fear. Unfortunately, delaying dental care can lead to bigger oral health concerns over time.
