staff and families that they were not alone. What happened at the preschool was also happening throughout the North Shore. Families were helping neighbors clean flooded homes. Local businesses stepped up to support one another. Volunteers moved from one property to the next, offering help however they could. During such a devastating time, there was also something incredibly powerful happening across the community: people choosing compassion over convenience and showing up for one another again and again. The flooding revealed the true heart of the North Shore. It showed the strength of a community deeply connected by love, generosity, faith, and aloha. For the preschool staff, one of the most meaningful moments came little by little during the rebuilding process. Each day, the campus began looking more like home again. Fresh paint covered the rebuilt walls. New shelves and carpets were placed in the classrooms. Donated toys, art supplies, and books were set back up. Slowly, the space transformed from disaster back into a place where children could feel safe, loved, and joyful again. And then came reopening day. After an amazing 3 weeks of uncertainty, cleanup, rebuilding, and prayer, the sound everyone had missed finally returned: the laughter and voices of the keiki filling the classrooms once again. What once looked impossible only weeks earlier had become reality because of the unwavering support of the community. First Baptist Church and Preschool of Haleiwa is deeply grateful for every person who played a part in helping the school recover. To the parents, staff, church members, volunteers, donors, neighbors, and friends who gave their time, resources, encouragement, and prayers, thank you. Because of this community, the preschool was able to reopen its doors for the children and families who call it home. In the end, this story became about much more than flood damage or rebuilding classrooms. It became a story about aloha. It became a story about the love for the preschool in their community. And it became a reminder that no matter what challenges come, this community will continue to stand beside one another, lift one another up, and rebuild together. 144 Hawaii Parent July/August 2026
