Held only when open-ocean swells are large enough to produce 40-foot wave faces, “The Eddie” runs on one epic day sometime between December 7, 2025 and March 6, 2026, if conditions line up. Named in honor of legendary waterman and lifeguard Eddie Aikau, this invitationonly big-wave contest brings together some of the world’s best surfers to ride truly massive surf on Oahu’s North Shore. Families can follow surf reports and event updates online and on local news—if the call is made, expect heavy traffic, huge crowds, and a once-in-a-lifetime show from the shoreline. WHALE SEASON December to May Every winter, majestic humpback whales migrate from Alaska’s cold waters to the warm, sheltered seas around Oahu. For the best chances of seeing them breeching, tail-slapping or playing with their calves, plan your outing between December and May, with the highest activity typically in January and February. You can spot whales from the shore at lookouts like Makapuu Lighthouse Trail, Halona Blowhole Lookout. For the closest encounters, join a boat tour from the south or west coasts.
