As parents, we want our kids to feel special on their birthdays. So it’s easy to get caught up in planning the perfect party. Before you know it, you’re worrying about one-of-a-kind cakes and Pinterest-perfect decorations. Will a simple bounce house be enough for the kids? If you find yourself treating birthday parties as a competitive sport, you’re not alone. Over–the–top kids parties are getting more popular. One survey party company found that one in seven parents spent more than $1,000 on their child’s birthday! Expensive parties and sky-high expectations aren’t a recipe for enjoyable party planning. Parents often find themselves by Sara Tiller 38 HAWAII PARENT July/August 2025

worrying about the party instead of enjoying it. When you’re stressed out, it’s hard to enjoy your child’s big day. What’s worse, a parent’s stress can make the birthday less fun for your child. So cut down on the stress of party planning by putting yourself in your child’s shoes. What are the memorable events at their friends’ parties? What do they have the most fun doing? Pinterest-perfect decorations probably aren’t at the top of their list! Get your child involved in the planning to connect before the party. The things your child wants – and what they don’t care about – might surprise you. Once you know what you both care about, focus on those parts of the party. Focusing on the most enjoyable parts of a birthday is a great way to cut down on party planning stress. If you love baking, making and decorating your child’s cake might be a great idea. If not, buying a cake may be a better idea. Costco offers sheet cakes with a variety of popular decorations. Princesses, dinosaurs, and beach decorations are sure to be a hit with the kids. At the same time, cut down on the parts of party planning you dislike. If you hate cleaning, consider having the party away from the house. Many parks and beaches are free; you can reserve picnic tables at other sites for a small fee. If you’re short on time, many places on Oahu offer party packages for kids. The Children’s Discovery Center in Honolulu is a popular location that offers party packages. Their “Birthday Bash” package includes pizza, juice, crafts, and admission to the discovery center. The Honolulu Zoo and Waikiki Aquarium are also popular birthday party spots. You might look at other places that offer party packages, like the Wet‘n’Wild Water Park. There are many other ways that you can cut down on party planning stress. Here are more tips to help you focus on your kids and enjoy the party planning process. BABIES AND TODDLERS Most babies and toddlers won’t remember their birthday parties. But these first few birthdays can be a big deal for mom and dad. Get a friend to take pictures or videos at these parties. This way, you’ll be able to focus on your baby. Remember to think small and simple when you’re planning birthday parties for young kids. Separation anxiety kicks in around this age. Most one-year-olds want to stick close to mom and dad. Toddlers and preschoolers can also get overwhelmed easily. Small parties can help them feel comfortable. TIPS • Plan birthday parties for right after your child’s nap. This way your toddler will be refreshed and excited to celebrate. Finding and sticking to a simple theme can help cut down on party planning stress. Good themes could be a favorite sport, animal, or color. These themes are broad enough that you’ll be able to find related decorations easily. They’ll also help to make the day memorable for your child. And because they’re classic, your child is likely to be interested in them for a while. TIPS • Decide on a reasonable number of guests. A good rule of thumb is your child’s age, plus one. • If your child has a close friend with a birthday around the same time, team up with his parents to have one big birthday party. • Think of party planning as a way to connect with your child. Find age-appropriate things you can do together, like dec- • Consider a drop in, open house style event. This allows other families with young kids to work around their schedules. It also helps keep your baby or toddler from getting overwhelmed. • Skip party favors. At this age, party favors tend to be a choking hazard. • Keep party food simple. Chicken nuggets, pizza fingers, and fruit are all great choices. • Choose cupcakes as an easy-to-serve alternative to cake. ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHILDREN Once your child starts school, birthday parties can become more than you bargained for. In some places, it’s common to invite your child’s whole class. If you want a smaller party, consider handing out invites outside of school. You can also use evites, or simply text other parents, to make this easier. “Avoid competitive games, since young kids tend to feel bad if they don’t win.” Many places on Oahu offer party packages for kids. 40 HAWAII PARENT July/August 2025

orating cupcakes or making goody bags. Including him in the party planning can also help you manage his expectations. • If the birthday boy has siblings who might get jealous, make sure that a close friend or your spouse is around to provide backup. They can keep an eye on the kids while you take care of the sibling. • Avoid competitive games, since young kids tend to feel bad if they don’t win. If you’re worried about bad sportsmanship, offer crafts as an alternative to games. OLDER CHILDREN As kids get older, it’s more common for parents to drop them off and pick them up after the party. Make the party more enjoyable to you by enlisting a friend to help you watch the kids. Make sure parents know when they should be back to pick up their kids. TIPS • Consider throwing birthday parties every few years, and alternating them with other fun events like sleepovers. • Request RSVPs and include a date that guests should reply by. That way, you won’t need to feel bad about following up when no one has replied. • Older kids often know what they want at their parties, and are old enough to help plan. Pick two or three things that you both enjoy, and focus on planning those. If you and your son love games, spend some quality time together picking out games to play. • If you’re worried that kids will get bored, have a few extra party games on hand. A scavenger hunt, balloon stomp, or photo booth with props from the dollar store are all fun and affordable ways to keep the kids entertained. • Plan the party for after lunch to avoid making lunch for all the guests. You can set up a table with self-serve snacks, juices, and water instead. Planning a party without a meal can also make the day easier on kids with allergies. “Finding and sticking to a simple theme can help cut down on stress.” July/August 2025 HAWAII PARENT 41

62 HAWAII PARENT July/August 2025 As parents, we believe our children should follow our rules, regardless of the circumstances. We give them consequences when they don’t abide by our rules. Often, we reach our limits and react out of frustration. the consequence if there’s a significant time gap between their behavior and the disciplinary action. If children are asked to clean their room and refuse to follow through, waiting a day to administer a consequence reduces the chances of completing the assigned task. They lose motivation to cooperate when they realize there’s no immediate consequence. Specific deadlines and expectations will prevent miscommunication. Strong-willed children may sound argumentative, but they possess a strong need to understand why they receive consequences. Instead of saying they need to mental meltdowns for both parent and child. Some children are naturally born pleasers. They crave acceptance and fear disapproval. Strongwilled children, however, may be perceived as difficult, stubborn, and argumentative. These children may be rebellious when all they crave is to be heard, understood, and never judged. They speak their mind, which is often mistaken for being disrespectful. Misunderstood or Misjudged? According to the Child Mind Institute, children are less likely to understand the connection between their misbehavior and 64 HAWAII PARENT July/August 2025 A calm-down space helps children regulate their emotions in a healthy, constructive way. “If they actively participate in choosing the consequences, they may gain a better understanding of their choices.”

Writing down an agreement, along with its consequences, may help prevent behavioral issues. If a strong-willed child hears, “If you don’t finish your tasks of making the bed, putting away clean clothes, and putting your dirty laundry in the hamper by 5 pm today, your weekend movie plans will be canceled,” they will understand the expectations and be clear about the consequences. If they actively be punished for poor behavior, explain expectations. They will be less likely to resist because of frustration if they understand the rules. Blurred rules cause confusion in strongwilled children. Confusion often leads to temper tantrums. Why Immediate Consequences are more Effective “I didn’t know you meant to clean my room today,” or “You didn’t say how much of my room needs to be cleaned” are possible excuses that will lead to parental When kids push back, it isn’t always defiance. Sometimes, it’s a signal they’re overwhelmed or unsure about what’s expected. “When children understand that it’s normal to be upset, and increase their EQ skills, they learn effective ways to process their feelings in healthy ways.”

adulthood may be surprised when their child transforms into a creative entrepreneur exceeding their expectations. When temper tantrums explode, remember to deep breathe and remember that strong-willed children thrive when they influence their environment and make their own decisions. Offer options instead of demanding a task’s deadline. “Would you like to brush your teeth at 7 pm or 7:30 pm?” gives them a choice rather than making them feel they must comply with demands. Peacemaking Strategies for Siblings Here are some ideas for creative peacemaking strategies instead of demanding apologies if siblings are arguing and tempers are escalating: participate in choosing the consequences, they may experience stronger feelings of ownership while learning self-regulation and gaining a better understanding of their choices. Through active participation in the process, children learn to associate their decisions with their outcomes, leading to improved behavioral patterns. This reduces your child feeling humiliated and feeling that their consequence doesn’t fit the crime. Stubborn or Successful: The LongTerm View Keep in mind that stubborn children may evolve into high-achieving adults who successfully climb the corporate ladder. Parents who question whether their obstinate child may struggle navigating 68 HAWAII PARENT July/August 2025 Instead of forced apologies, try playful connection. 3. Dedicate 15 minutes where they can express their feelings without judgment or lectures about what triggered their outburst. Ask them how they can handle future anger situations without losing their temper. Brainstorming ideas automatically melts away anger. 4. Develop a relaxation chart that shows methods for achieving calmness. This offers different calming techniques, such as counting to ten or selecting a preferred scented lotion, before giving themselves a foot and hand massage. A fun creative option is participating in a favorite activity like puzzles or finger painting. New calming methods can be added to the chart whenever children think of different relaxation ideas. The Hidden Gifts of Strong Willed Children Most parents fail to realize the hidden gift of their strong-willed child. Stubborn behavior may be signs of leadership skills, assertiveness, and critical thinking. While raising children who are quick to anger can be challenging, they can be the best teachers for parents, teaching patience and compassion. When you feel frustrated with endless “why” questions, take a deep breath, and envision your child’s passionate curiosity leading to creative discoveries. 70 HAWAII PARENT July/August 2025 1. Set a timer for 1 minute, and request siblings to smile and hug each other. 2. Standing nose to nose with a sibling for 2 minutes changes their mood because of the silliness of an unusual interaction. 3. After taking 3 deep breaths, each sibling sits crossing their legs while sitting with their knees touching. Ask them to share a positive trait about their sibling. 4. Moods can change when environments change. Set a timer for 10 minutes and request siblings to run around the yard or each room of the house. 5. Choose a fun book and each sibling takes turns reading a page for 10 minutes. The key to guiding strong-willed siblings from boiling with anger to simmering with peace is to teach them the importance of emotional regulation. When children understand that it’s normal to be upset, and increase their EQ skills, they learn effective ways to process their feelings in healthy ways. Teaching empathy by having each child put themselves in their sibling’s shoes offers insight on building better relationships, managing overwhelm, and preparing them for the real world as adults. Encourage Reflection, Not Rejection Instead of enforcing time-outs as a punishment, here are options that offer reflection time. Parents may feel time-outs need to be a negative consequence, but reflection time offers children an outlet to diffuse their anger. 1. Read a fun book or watch a show then share their favorite scenes. 2. Create a calm-down area where they listen to calming music while practicing deep breathing and expressing their feelings through drawing. Scribbling with crayons and ripping their paper afterwards helps process their anger. Karen K.C.
