Hawai Military Guide - Winter-Spring 2025

Why is Tripler pink? Many myths exist surrounding the medical facility’s iconic color: businessman Henry Kaiser’s affinity for pink, a soldier who ordered the wrong color, mixing coral and red dirt to make paint, a lottery selection of the color, pink as camouflage during World War II, a specification of the color pink by the land donors and to resemble Waikiki’s pink Royal Hawaiian Hotel – among other myths. But, officially, Tripler’s former Provost Marshall, the late Donald DeVaney, said Army engineers wanted the hospital and its surrounding buildings to avoid an institutional atmosphere and to, instead, create the impression of a residential community with a pink stucco finish. He shared this official story during Tripler’s 60th anniversary in 2008.
