The Alaska Miner - Spring 2024

The Alaska Miner Spring 2024 30 AMA Board Members: Ketchikan/Prince of Wales & Denali Ketchikan Chairman Robert Fithian Bobby has spent the past 40 years working in resource-based industries throughout Alaska including mining, forestry, guiding, agriculture, and specialty construction. He previously served on the Anchorage AMA BOD and as elected statewide AMA President. Additionally, he has served several industry leadership roles and numerous State and Federal appointments. During 1982 he founded Alaska Hardrock Mining and continues to conduct unique projects throughout Alaska. Currently, he is the cofounder, co-owner and general manager of Alaska’s sixth operating hardrock mine, the Dawson Mine on Prince of Wales Island. James Barker James Barker first worked in the mineral industry while in and following high school when he went to work for Republic Steel Corp. in 1963 and for several following summers. Later, in college at Missouri School of Mines, I joined a college coop program where I alternately worked at the White Pine Copper Mine in upper Michigan. Thence returning for the following semester back at Missouri. When in Michigan I was assigned to the Mines Underground Research Dept. In Jan. 1969 I enrolled at the University of Alaska and subsequently completed my Mining Engineer degree there at UAF and spent a year with Atlantic Richfield at Prudhoe Bay. Beginning 1973, I became the Fairbanks district minerals specialist for the BLM: later I was transferred to the u.s. Bureau Mines where I was assigned to quantify and report on "critical minerals in Alaska", and coordinate these studies with other agencies and the public. To this end I travel throughout Alaska and documented about 75-to-100 published reports: presentations, etc. on Alaskan deposits of "critical minerals" and visited and reported on such deposits in about 25 other countries. When and where possible I continue to report on Alaska's mineral endowment. In the late 1960s then Pres. Clinton abruptly closed the USBuMines and I have consequently gone into private consulting practice. I continue to specialize in strategic and critical minerals. I currently live in Ketchikan but continue to do mineral exploration activities throughout Alaska, and keep limited seasonal facilities and an office in Fairbanks. Alex Legrismith Alex began his career in mining at a small placer mine in the Brooks Range. He worked his way through college doing exploration field work on the Tetlin project with Avalon Development. In 2013 he graduated with a degree in mining engineering from UAF. Currently he is working as a mining engineer at Usibelli Coal Mine. Steve Kemble Steve Kemble serves as the Southern Southeast Alaska Manager for Tyler Rental, based in Ketchikan. His journey to Southeast Alaska began in 1992 due to his military service, during which he met his wife, Pam. After briefly leaving the area, Steve and Pam chose to return to Southeast Alaska to raise their children. Over the last 20 years, Steve has held various positions throughout Tyler Rental. His significant contributions include supporting surrounding mines by sourcing the appropriate equipment and providing project-specific support to ensure smooth operations from their start-up stages. Outside of work, Steve and his family enjoy spending time out on the boat and hiking Southeast Alaskan trails with their dogs. Denali Chairman Ethan Trickey Ethan is a mining engineer at Usibelli Coal Mine and a graduate of the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He's an avid snowmachiner. Colin Keith Colin Keith began his career in mining by joining the Warehouse team at Usibelli Coal Mine in 1991. After 14 years in the warehouse, he moved into the role of Purchasing Agent. Along the way he was active in volunteering with the Tri-Valley Volunteer Fire Department as an EMT-III and Firefighter, ultimately serving as Fire Chief for several years. Colin has been in his current role as Safety Director for UCM for approximately two years. In his free time, he likes to travel and spend time with extended family.
