The Alaska Miner - Spring 2024

The Alaska Miner Spring 2024 26 Chairman Dave Larimer While raised in Colorado, I very much consider Alaska as my home. The roots to my “transplant” to Alaska started in 2000, with my first duty station for the US Army to Ft. Wainwright. Following my service, and multiple deployments around the world, I moved back to Fairbanks. As an Economic Geologist, my passion is the understanding of how hydrothermal gold systems develop and form. Further to this, I enjoy working these deposits into pathways that can be economically extracted. I have worked pure greenfield exploration, brownfield exploration, production, resource modeling, as well as conducting advanced research through out interior Alaska. I have had the privilege of working at Pogo Mine for many years, with the last 5 as the Chief Exploration and Production Geologist. Red Dog Mine as the Principal Exploration Geologist responsible for the district exploration, Anarraaq and Aktigiruq advanced project development, and brownfield exploration. I did a minor stint in Nevada as the Mineral Resource Manager for the Carlin Complex (6 mines) for Nevada Gold Mines. I am currently the Vice President of Exploration for the newly established Felix Gold exploration company, based here in Fairbanks. I feel honored to be here and could not be where we are with out the support of my loving wife Vanessa (Alaska and Fairbanks Native), our son Brandyn (currently deployed to Qatar with the US Army), and our two dogs Charlie and Kevin (both born here in Fairbanks). Tom Bundtzen Thomas K. Bundtzen is a Fairbanks-based, geologist that has been active in Alaska for more than 40 years. He received a BS degree in Mining Geology from the College of Earth Sciences and Mineral Industries (CESMI) at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks (UAF) in 1973 and an M.S. Degree in Economic Geology at UAF in 1981. For 25 years, Tom was Senior Economic Geologist with the geological survey division of the Alaska Department of Natural Resources, where he completed geologic mapping studies of State-owned lands and designed and wrote the Alaska Minerals Report series for two decades. During the 1980s, Tom provided the State of Alaska summaries of strategic and critical mineral endowment during the D-2 Land debates. In 1997, Tom retired from state service and established Pacific Rim Geological Consulting, Inc. (PRGCI), a Fairbanks-based consulting company. He has conducted mineral studies in Alaska, Northwest Canada, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Greenland and the Russian Federation. A past Statewide President of the Alaska Miners Association (2003-2005), Tom is the current President of the Alaska Mining Hall of Fame Foundation, an organization that honors Alaska’s Mining Pioneers. Denise Herzog Manager – Environmental Affairs, Tower Hill Mines, Inc. – Livengood Gold Project. I’m a lifelong Alaskan and I grew up in the mining industry. My parents ran a placer mine in the Yentna Mining District. I attended UAF for geological engineering, worked for the U.S. Bureau of Mines and BLM. I went to work for Industry early in my career and have worked on many exploration/permitting projects around Alaska including Ryan Lode, True North, Pogo, Donlin, and Pebble. I’ve been at the Livengood Project for the last 10 years. My parents were active in AMA starting in the 1970s and I have served in the director and secretary positions at the AMA Fairbanks Branch, before “retiring” to focus on my family. I presently hold the mining seat on the Alaska Board of Forestry. My husband, John Cook, has also been long associated with the mining industry – mining on Fairbanks Creek for about 20 years. Wendie MacNaughton Wendie has called Fairbanks her home since 1991 when she was brought to Alaska as a young military brat. She graduated from Ben Eielson High School followed by the University of Alaska Fairbanks (Go Nooks!). Wendie began her career in mining in 2017 and is currently the External Affairs Manager for Northern Star Resources Limited, owner and operator of Pogo Mine. Wendie participates on several industry boards and committees including Resource Development Council, Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce, Alaska Miners Association and Alaska Metal Mines. In her free time, Wendie spends most of her time at the hockey rink with her 15-year-old son and enjoys traveling and experiencing new adventures. Bonnie Broman I am the VP Exploration for Valhalla Metals currently working to develop the Sun deposit in the Ambler Mining District. I grew up on the Outer Banks of North Carolina and have always wanted to be a geologist from a very young age. I spent my entire life preparing for a science degree by taking as many science classes as I could as a high school student – even geology! I went to Appalachian State University in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina to get my Geology degree. However, after graduating quickly realized there wasn’t much opportunity for me back home on one of the largest strips of sand on the east coast, so headed west! I started my career in Alaska working at the Nixon Fork gold mine in south-central Alaska and never looked back! I then started my Masters journey in Geology at UAF studying under Rainer Newberry and completed my master’s on the Arctic deposit and haven’t been able to leave the Ambler District since! I am involved in several public and private companies investing in mining projects in Alaska. This has opened my eyes to not only the geologic challenges we face, but more critically the business challenges we face with continued over-regulation. I’ve been a member of AMA for 15 years and am happy to call Alaska home. I am happy to be on the Board and welcome the opportunity to serve our members and help wherever I can. Clark Milne Clark Milne is a retired civil/environmental engineer, who has spent over 50 years in northern Alaska managing construction projects, road and airport maintenance, and helping to encourage/enable modern arctic mining development. He is actively engaged with Fairbanks’ community activities and is confident that Alaska’s mining and natural resource work will continue to serve Alaska’s best interests.
