116 PUNCHMAGAZINE.COM AWASH IN SHIPWRECKS Let’s rewind in time to the 1853 shipwreck that earned Pigeon Point its name. Enter the Carrier Pigeon, a handsome clipper with the gilded figurehead of a bird on its prow. Loaded with 1,300 tons of cargo, the ship launched from Boston on its maiden voyage with grand ambitions. It braved the 100-mile-an-hour gales and mountainous waves of Cape Horn—only to run aground 50 or so miles from its destination. The Carrier Pigeon, its sails fluttering uselessly like broken wings, would never again soar across the surf. It's worth noting that this shipwreck occurred in June.
